U.S. Mintages Can Be Deceiving1882 Morgan Silver Dollar Morgan mintages steadily rose in the 1880s, when silver was pouring out of the great Western mines. But many were held in reserve and later lost in government melts. So original mintages can be very deceiving in relation to actual survival numbers. For example, this 1882 Philadelphia Morgan had an original mintage of 11,100,000. But today fewer than 10% are estimated to survive in our Very Fine or better quality.
U.S. 1882-O New Orleans Morgan Silver Dollar The 1882-O Morgan silver dollar emerged from the New Orleans Mint in the year that outlaw Jesse James was shot down, after robbing countless bags of Morgan silver dollars from banks and trains. This vintage issue was among the first in the series, when this famous silver dollar was a days pay for many. Just 3% of the original mintage may remain today in mint-state quality putting market pressure on Very Fine specimens like these.
