Replacing the tough to mint Buffalo nickel, the Jefferson series began in 1938. The engraving of Thomas Jefferson added another U.S. coin to the growing collection featuring early Presidential portraits. Just 19.4 million were struck in Philadelphia during its first year of issue. The very next year, six times as many were produced and annual outputs continued to grow from there. Our Brilliant Uncirculated specimens have never entered commerce.
