During World War II, copper was a critical metal needed for munitions, so in 1943 pennies were output with zinc-coated steel. These steel cents caused problems, so the Mint replaced them from 1944 to 1946 using recycled shell casings. When you buy a set of three different shell casing cents in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, we'll include a 1943 BU steel cent FREE! Dates and mints of our choice (there may be repeat dates from different mints).
