On Septeber 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people were killed in terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City; the Pentagon in Arlington, Viriginia and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
In 2010, the U.S. Mint was authorized to strike a silver medal in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the attacks. The one ounce silver issue features Lady Liberty holding the Lamp of Remembrance with beacons of light stretching skyward, symbolizing not just the immeasurable loss on that fateful day, but also the resiliency and triumph of those who persevered. On the reverse of the medal is an eagle, representing the strength of survivors, families and the nation.
