Following the end of the American Revolutionary War, the newly formed nation of the United States sent the Empress of China, a three-masted merchant ship on the first voyage into Chinese waters in 1794 to establish trade relations. This 90% silver coin was issued in commemoration of the first maritime trade between the two countries. Its obverse features a portion of the Great Wall of China and shown on its reverse is the American merchant vessel in full sail. Just 90,000 were struck more than 35 years ago.
