In German the word notgeld translates to "necessity money." These highly collectible and fascinating notes were a form of emergency currency issued by local German municipalities when there was a shortage of money coming from the central bank. Used as scrip within communities, these colorful notes could be redeemed for specific goods and services. Notgeld was issued both pre and post-World War I and again at the height of Germany's hyperinflation crisis in the early 1920s. Set of 10 different notgeld in Circulated to Uncirculated condition.
