"You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you."   — General Dwight D, Eisenhower

June 6th, 1944. As fighting continued during World War II, General Dwight D. Eisenhower gave the green-light for Operation Overlord to commence. More than 150,000 Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy on what would later become known as D-Day. American, British and Canadian troops fought to liberate France from Nazi Germany occupation.

Issued on behalf of Gibraltar, this cupro nickel 50 pence coin commemorates the Allied invasion of Normandy. Featured on the reverse of the coin in color are the three national flags of the United States, United Kingdom and Canada. The coastline of Normandy and its five beaches involved in the invasion are shown, while the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse. Just 7,500 will be issued.
