A Creole priest, Miguel Hidalgo is revered as "the Father of Mexican Democracy." In 1811 he gave his life to the cause of Mexican independence from Spain. The sculpted portrait captures his intense dedication to liberty. On the obverse is the famous Mexican Eagle of democracy. This gold coin was struck intermittently during and after both world wars.
