Mexico's great silver dollar tradition is the oldest in the Americas and this much-admired, short-lived type ranks very high. Shown is a splendid portrait of the valiant Cuauhtemoc, nephew of Montezuma and the last Aztec ruler. He defied Cortez's demand for gold treasure and suffered torture and death with stoic silence. On the reverse an eagle kills a snake on a cactus; a legend holds that the Aztec capital at Mexico City was founded at this site. Brilliant Uncirculated. 40mm
