U.S. 1839-1841 Republic of Texas $10 Redback Note.

When Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, Texas was part of the newly independent Republic. After the victory at San Jacinto in 1836, the area gained autonomy and the Republic of Texas was born. Banknotes were issued as an expression of its sovereignty. When redeemed, the redbacks were cancelled by cutting an X, therefore most notes feature these cut-cancellations.
