In 1941 the final U.S. nickels were produced with 25% nickel and 75% copper. Nickel was a critical metal during World War II, so beginning in 1942 a combination of copper, silver and manganese was used. Of the three mints, this S-mint Jefferson specimen had the lowest output for the year.
