Most of the key rarities in the Morgan silver dollar series are from the 1890s. The reason is that Morgan mintages plummeted after the repeal of the Silver Purchase Act in 1893. Even when mintages began to rise again in the late 1890s, they remained relatively low compared to earlier decades. In BU quality, the 1898 Philadelphia Mint Morgan is twice as scarce as the 1896 and up to ten times scarcer than some other 1880s issues, while only about 10% of surviving mint-state specimens are estimated to be in the super-lustrous MS-64 quality that we offer.
