Shortly after its 1878 introduction, the Philadelphia-issued Morgan dollar's reverse engraving underwent several design changes resulting in a number of collectible varieties – all because of the number of tail feathers the eagle had!
1884 Morgan Silver Dollar XF – Morgan mintages in this period had been substantial, so few 1884 issues needed to enter commerce. Of those held in reserve, vast numbers were later lost in government melts. Now 140 years later, a scant 4% of the original mintage is estimated to survive in XF condition or higher grades.
