1878 Eight Tail Feather Variety. Around 750,000 thousand of these very first Morgans had been struck by the Philadelphia Mint when the series was abruptly stopped — in part over the number of feathers on the eagle's tail. Talk about splitting hairs... or in this case feathers.
1878 Seven Over Eight Tail Feather Variety. When the number of tail feathers was settled on (seven), reverse dies that were already on hand were altered and used to strike more coins. However, vestiges of eight feathers remained on the new coins, resulting in an over-punched doubled or "seven over eight" variety.
1878 Seven Tail Feather Reverse of ‘78. Again alterations were made to the Morgan's reverse engraving. The seven tail feathers remained, but the flat breasted eagle was somewhat scrawny in appearance. The feathers of the arrow it clutched in its talons displayed parallel fletching.
