1880 Morgan Silver Dollar BU: The effects of the "Great Melt" of 1918 are still felt among Morgan collectors more than a century after it occurred. While the passage of the Pittman Act may have saved Great Britain during WWI, it decimated the number of silver dollars that had been stored – over 270 million were melted and converted to bullion. One of those mintages undoubtedly affected was this 1880 issue: as few as 217,000 may currently survive in mint-state quality – less than 1.7% of the original 12.6 million output. Lustrous, BU quality.
1883 Morgan Silver Dollar BU: Thanks to the abundance of silver that was still being hauled from the earth in the western bonanza mines like Comstock and Tombstone, Morgan mintages steadily increased during the 1880s. Like so many other issues, the 1883 Philadelphia Morgan had huge numbers tucked away in vaults and many of those silver dollars met their fate in vast government melts. It's estimated that as little as 3% of this principal mint's original 1883 mintage may remain in this beautiful Brilliant Uncirculated quality today.
