As few as 73,000 (just 0.6%) of the 1887-O issue is estimated to exist in mint-state condition today, which is one of the very lowest survival rates in the Morgan series. An unusually large proportion were held in reserve and lost in government melts during the world wars. These About Uncirculated specimens are much more affordable than BU and just shy of mint-state quality. AU dollars boast original mint luster, but show slight wear at the highest points of a coin's design.
