Authorized by Congress for the 400th anniversary of Columbus' epic voyage; this coin was struck to help fund the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This silver half dollar was the first commemorative coin design in U.S. history. The obverse presents a portrait of Columbus, while the reverse depicts the Santa Maria flagship, modeled on a replica that sailed from Spain to America for the Exposition. The Old and New World hemispheres below echo the famous design of America's first silver dollar used in the original Thirteen Colonies. Very Fine quality. Our choice of date.
