In the years following the repeal of the 1893 Sherman Silver Purchase Act, silver dollar production plummeted. Overall, fewer Morgans were issued in 1895 than any other date in the series. That year New Orleans output a scant 450,000 Morgans and much of that mintage was released into circulation or later melted, leaving very few surviving silver dollars in mint-state. The rarity of this coin commands a premium in finer grades — in 2005, the finest known MS-67 specimen crossed the auction block at $575,000! Finding the 1895-O in the marketplace can be a challenge and to put into perspective, our just shy of mint-state About Uncirculated specimens sell for over $3,300. We've acquired a few next-grade-down, sharply detailed Extra Fine specimens and when compared to AU will save you thousands!
