Product Description
In 1926, all dies of the Peace dollar were modified to strengthen the appearance of the word GOD on the obverse. It was the only year in the series where GOD had a higher relief than any other word on the coin. It was obviously no accident, but no one knows how or why the change was made. Some historians suspect a miscreant employee may have been influenced by the 1925 Scopes Trial. That case, concerning the teaching of evolution in public schools, garnered national attention and caused much religious fervor.
By this point in the Peace series, the mintage quota set by Congress was rapidly nearing due to the massive numbers struck earlier in the series. Across all mints, annual outputs were dropping; with just 1.9 million struck, this Philadelphia issue claims the lowest production of any Peace dollar for the year — and today less than 60,000 are estimated to remain in mint-state condition. Average BU specimens sell for nearly $300, but our just-shy-of-mint-state "GOD dollar" in About Uncirculated condition is an appealing alternative for much less.
