As supplies of copper were diverted to the war effort a new, ghostlygray Lincoln cent emerged in 1943. These zinc-plated coins were doomed from the start; they wreaked havoc in vending machines and were also prone to corrosion and rust. Huge numbers of 1943 steel cents were produced with the best of intentions, but only a small portion avoided circulation and remain today in this super-gem MS-66 condition with impressively clean surfaces. PCGS or NGC.
