Product Description
We're excited to share that we've sourced a small number of early double mint sets from 1951 — in original packaging — which is kind of a big deal as any serious collector knows that these septuagenarian sets are notoriously difficult to find still intact!
The first uncirculated sets produced from 1947 to 1958 contained not one, but two examples of each coin struck for commerce by issuing mints, which is why they are often referred to as "double mint sets." Sets from this generation were packaged in envelopes; the coins within held in cardboard with paper flaps — not exactly ideal for long-term storage. In 1951, just 8,654 mint sets were produced and at the time contained more specimens than any previous year, featuring 30 circulation coins — 18 of which boasted 90% silver content — from Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco.
The 1951 mint set stands apart from rest of the series for being the last of its kind to ever have an output under five figures as well as having the smallest mintage of all sets from the 1950s. You can see why we're so tickled about this special acquisition — our available 1951 mints sets have escaped the gauntlet so to speak, remaining intact, in original packaging for over 70 years! Because of that, please note that specimens housed within may display toning.
