The year 1964 featured the final principal Philadelphia Mint issued U.S. proof set. That year was also the last to carry circulation dimes, quarters and half dollars struck with the traditional 90% silver content. No regular proof sets were issued from 1965 to 1967. (Instead, the Mint introduced Special Mint Sets as a collector-oriented alternative.) In 1968 the San Francisco Mint issued its first dazzling U.S. proof set featuring clad coinage. These sets shifted to new improved packaging housing specimens in a rigid plastic case that showed both sides of the coins.
