The Ike series was intended to revive the tradition of large 38mm dollar coins in American commerce as the last such U.S. coin had been struck in 1935. Because the price of silver was higher than previously, Ike dollars intended for commerce were copper-nickel. Only 6% of these coins were struck in this 40% silver-clad form, and of those, less than half in this spectacular proof quality.
