No dollar coins had been struck for commerce since 1935 when the last Peace dollars were minted. After a lengthy hiatus, the big Eisenhower dollar was introduced in 1971. The Philadelphia and Denver Mints were responsible for producing clad Ikes for circulation. The series was brief and although Ike dollars were popular with collectors, their hefty size proved cumbersome in commerce and they were finally discontinued in 1978. These mid-series copper-nickel specimens are especially affordable!
