Webb, Martin L. Dalton, Jr., and George R. Walker, Jr., performed the world's first human lung transplant at the University of Mississippi.
Following the transplant, the patient lived for almost three weeks before succumbing to renal failure. However, the achievement was undeniable and that initial procedure opened the way for exciting developments in human lung transplantation, and began a new era of therapy for lung disease in humans.
The obverse features a dramatic representation of the Statue of Liberty and includes a stylized gear privy mark representing industry and innovation. On the reverse is a pair of human lungs and gloved hands passing forceps. Edge incused date and mintmark.
