Product Description
The dome of the United States Capitol Building is an icon of American government and of the Washington, D.C. landscape. The Capitol Building was originally designed by architect William Thornton, who was born in the British Virgin Islands. Construction began in 1793; the building later burned during the War of 1812 and was rebuilt, but the Capitol did not receive the iconic cast iron dome we see today until the mid-19th century. The dome is constructed of almost nine million pounds of cast iron girders, plates and columns!
Just 5,000 of these intricate dome-shaped $1 coins were issued by the esteemed Pobjoy Mint on behalf of the British Virgin Islands in 2017. This patriotic commemorative is minted in nickel silver, an alloy with a silvery appearance that contains no actual silver. For safe keeping, each Uncirculated coin is stored in a red, white and blue faux leather pouch. Queen Elizabeth II obverse.
