Known by the initials VOC, the Dutch East India Company struck the copper duit for use in its colonies, including the island of New Amsterdam, which we now know as Manhattan. Often referred to as "New York's first penny," these coins traveled around the globe and those that landed in America were used far beyond the Dutch ownership of the island.
