How to Care for Your Coins and Maintain Their Value

As a coin collector, you may know that one of the most important things you can do to preserve your collection’s value and appearance is to make sure that your coins are stored properly. It’s important to minimize the coin’s exposure to moisture, chemicals and the elements.

If possible, do not remove your coin from the plastic holder in which you receive it. When you do remove the coin, handle it only by the edges. Never place a finger on either the obverse or the reverse of a coin! The oil that is present on skin will interact with most metals to produce ugly spots which cannot be removed and affect the value of the coin. It is helpful to wear gloves when handling coins to prevent deterioration.

Wear can also be caused by friction. The coin should not be left in a drawer, box or on a table without its holder. Never rub a coin with a towel or tissue. This will result in tiny lines, known as hairline scratches, and will detract from the coin’s value.

To avoid damage, always hold coins with special care. Try to hold them only over soft surfaces such as padded cushions or carpeting.

There are many options available for storing and displaying your collection including albums, capsules and cases.

Conscientious care and handling of your coins will enhance your enjoyment of them and also ensure that their optimal value is maintained.

Please Note: Certified coins should never be removed from their cases, and are not returnable once removed.
