Here's the opportunity to hold shipwreck treasure in your hand — these coins of the British Empire sat on the ocean floor for 175 years! In January, 1809 the Admiral Gardner was bound for the East Indies on what would be her final voyage. The ill-fated cargo ship sailed in perilous weather from London laden with 46 tons of copper cash coins, but in the howling gale, she wrecked on the Goodwin Sands — a region notorious for claiming vessels and sailors alike. The whereabouts of her wreckage was unknown until 1984; divers retrieved much of her cargo, including a sealed barrel that contained thousands of cash coins! That barrel preserved these very specimens struck for the East India Company. Their obverse bears the royal insignia of the E.I.C. with exotic Mughal script on the reverse. Dates may vary. Circulated condition.
