1883-1912 Liberty Head Nickel Type II Trio. In 1883, the new nickel featured only a large Roman numeral V for the 5¢ denomination. Racketeers gold-plated some and passed them off as $5 gold pieces. According to numismatic folklore, Josh Tatum was the most notorious crook — because he was unable to hear or speak, his lawyer got him off by claiming that Tatum couldn't tell merchants it was merely a nickel and the phrase, "I was only joshing you" entered the language. Our set includes the second 1883-1912 type with CENTS added to the reverse engraving. Good quality. Our choice of dates.Limit 5 per household.
