In 1883, the new nickel designed by Charles E. Barber featured only a large "V" for the 5 cent denomination. Racketeers gold-plated some and passed them off as $5 gold pieces. Later that year, a second type was minted with the added word CENTS below the V. Pair includes original 1883 no cents nickel and revised 1883-1913 with cents nickel in Fine quality.
