In 1883, the new nickel featured only a large Roman numeral "V" for the five-cent denomination. Racketeers gold-plated these coins and passed them off as $5 gold pieces. Folklore has it that Josh Tatum was the most notorious of those crooks — because he was unable to hear or speak, his lawyer got him off by claiming that Tatum couldn't tell merchants it was merely a nickel and the phrase, "I was only joshing you" entered the language. Fine quality.
