In 1883, the new Liberty head nickel featured only a large V for the 5 cent denomination. Swindlers gold-plated the coins and passed them off as $5 gold pieces. Later that year, the word "cents" was added and remained for the rest of the series. This Good quality issue is the original "No Cents" type.
