This set was one of the last with traditional silver content as the U.S. Mint ceased to issue 90% silver coins for use in commerce after 1964. When this set was issued no one anticipated that it would be the last to include Franklin silver half dollars. The very next year, after the assassination of the president, the Kennedy half dollar was introduced. The sets mintage of 606,612 was last to be under a million.
