Struck in 1922 to honor the centennial anniversary of Civil War Union General and 18th President, Ulysses S. Grant's birth, proceeds raised from the sale of this 90% silver half dollar would help fund several memorial projects planned in his honor. Two types were issued: the first struck with a star near the bust of Grant resulted in less than 4,300 pieces; the subsequent no-star version's mintage of 67,405 made up the bulk of the total output. The stalwart portrait of Grant is based on a photograph by Matthew Brady, while the reverse depicts the simple log home where Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio. We offer the more affordable no-star type in Extra Fine quality.
