This issue had the second-lowest mintage in the entire series. Its 3.5 million output was just 3% of that year's Philadelphia Mint production. These 1939-D issues were circulated heavily as America climbed out of the Great Depression and the threat of World War II loomed in the future. With such a low mintage and with heavy circulation, Brilliant Uncirculated specimens are becoming harder to find.
