A unique issue in U.S. currency, this penny is steel-colored instead of the usual copper. During World War II, due to a copper shortage, there wasn't enough to use for the regular minting of pennies. 1943 was a critical year during World War II, so in true American fashion, many different metals and plastics were tried until the zinc-coated steel was found to be the best option.
