Minted from 1916 to 1947, the Walking Liberty half dollar is often considered the most beautiful silver coin ever used in American commerce. This classic coin served Americans through World War I, the Great Depression and World War II. Unabashedly patriotic, the obverse of the 90% silver half dollar depicts Liberty garbed in the American flag striding toward the dawn of a new era. Perched upon a rocky crag on the reverse is a vigilant eagle, a symbol of America's strength as a nation.
Just 2.5 million of these silver beauties were struck at the San Francisco Mint eighty years ago. Later outputs in the series would reach over 53 million!
