Since first issued in 1932, the Washington quarter's reverse depicted a stylized eagle. Quarters struck in 1998 would be the last to wear this classic design. The following year, the U.S. Mint introduced the State quarter series which featured changing reverse engravings. In proof quality, these 1998 specimens were not available individually; over time they have been removed from complete proof sets by collectors and dealers.
