The first issue was intended as a commemorative of Washington's 200th birthday. It proved so popular that the coin became the standard U.S. quarter in 1934. As the cost of silver rose, 90% silver Washington quarters were discontinued after 1964. Authorities estimate that over 75% of these silver issues may have been lost to melts over the years.
