With a hulking diameter of 29 millimeters — nearly the size of a modern half dollar — Draped Bust cents were issued during the primordial years of the Philadelphia Mint. Designed by Chief Engraver Robert Scot, the bust of Liberty was thought to have been based on a painting of an American socialite by the preeminent portrait artist, Gilbert Stuart. Although more than 16 million large cents were struck over a period of 12 years, much of the mintage was used heavily in commerce. More than two centuries later, these Very Good quality specimens still retain clear dates and major designs.
