As a result of penny shortages, in 1851 Congress authorized the issuance of silver three-cent pieces, or trimes. This new denomination was convenient for purchasing newly-issued three-cent stamps sold by the government. The obverse design featured a unique sixpointed star and Union shield. The reverse bore a Roman numeral III within an ornate C, which represents "cents." The 14mm trime is the smallest silver coin in U.S. history.
