Product Description
There were a variety of revisions to the Indian Head cent early in the series, including a change of composition due to the Civil War. Cent pieces from 1864 on (including these 1865 issues) were struck in bronze alloy. Two decidedly distinctive varieties were output in 1865: called the "Plain Five" and "Fancy Five" based on the differing styles of — you guessed it — the number 5 used for the date. The plain type's numeral features a flat top and horizontal stroke that reaches outside the ball of the bottom curve. The ornate digit of the aptly-named fancy type carries a strongly arched top with horizontal stroke lining up with the ball below. Our Good quality specimens may have circulated a century and a half ago but still retain clear details.Product Videos
