Having outgrown its original facility, in 1874 the San Francisco Mint opened its new digs, complete with the most advanced minting contraptions, gadgets and gizmos of the day. Its minting prowess was still apparent years later when it produced the 1879-S, 1880-S and 1882-S dollars; today these issues are considered to be three of the most beautifully struck Morgans of the entire series. The gorgeous MS-63 specimens were most likely struck with nearly fresh dies and never entered circulation. The obverse and reverse of each coin exhibits marvelous luster and only slight bagmarks.
