According to numismatic folklore, the obverse engraving of the Standing Liberty quarter caused an uproar when first unveiled. Long before it was acceptable for American women to let down their proverbial hair, sentinels of public modesty expressed outrage that a U.S. coin would dare depict a female figure with an exposed breast and thigh. In response, a new type emerged; Hermon A. MacNeil modified his original design and covered up the scantily clad Lady Liberty in chain-mail, which happened to coincide with America's inevitable entry into World War I. Liberty would continue to be fully robed until the series' end in 1930. Good quality. Our choice of three different Type II dates.
