1923 Monroe Doctrine Silver Half Dollar, This classic 1923 silver commemorative honors the centennial of the Monroe Doctrine, which asserted that the U.S. would not tolerate European interference in the Americas. Shown circa 1823 are jugate busts of President James Monroe and then Secretary of State, John Quincy Adams. The reverse engraving features an artistic rendering of a relief map of North and South America with two female figures representing the shape of each continent. 1925 Stone Mountain Silver Half Dollar, More than 50 years after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and the Battle of Gettysburg, Gutzon Borglum — the illustrious sculptor of the Mount Rushmore Memorial — was chosen to carve giant figures of Confederate soldiers on the face of Stone Mountain, Georgia. He also designed this 1925 half dollar to help raise funds for the project. The obverse of this popular 90% silver coin portrays Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson on horseback.
