When the quarter's ho-hum Barber engraving was retired in late 1916, the beautiful Standing Liberty design that replaced it pos-i-tive-ly shocked straight-laced members of the American public. Lady Liberty was depicted with an exposed breast and thigh — no doubt causing much averting of eyes, blushing, tut-tuts and harrumphs among guardians of public modesty. Partway through 1917, the scantily clad Liberty was covered up in chainmail and remained so until the end of the series. In its final year of production, only Philadelphia and San Francisco minted the 1930 Standing Liberty quarter, turning out a combined 7.2 million pieces — a number that pales in comparison to the billions of quarters that are now struck annually.
