While the vast majority of Lincoln cents are readily available and affordable, some are indeed scarce. In 1931 the demand for coins was rapidly declining due to the Great Depression which impacted mintages significantly. The 1931-S cent had an unusually low output of just 866,000 giving it the distinction of the second lowest mintage in the series. Only one other issue — the famous key date 1909-S VDB — had fewer produced. In 1931 the Denver Mint produced just 4.5 million cents, a huge drop from over 40 million output a year before. That makes the 1931-D an important key to the series as well. We'll combine those two low-mintage issues with the Philadelphia cent for a complete trio. Well-preserved Fine quality.
