1936 Oakland Bay Bridge Silver Half Dollar AU: In 1936, the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was opened to travelers. This handsome silver coin was struck by the San Francisco Mint to honor the occasion, depicting the Bay Bridge and Ferry Tower on its reverse. These issues were sold to drivers from booths on either end of the bridge – as perhaps the most unique way to acquire a commemorative coin! A total of 71,424 coins were distributed, but today an estimated 48,000 may exist in mint-state grades. We've sourced gorgeous AU specimens.
1936 Norfolk Bicentennial Silver Half Dollar BU: Crammed full of dates and inscriptions, this busy coin celebrates the transformation of Norfolk, Virginia from township to borough, to city. While 25,000 were authorized, less than 17,000 were actually sold, most likely due to the plethora of commemorative coins that had already been issued in 1936. The half dollar was designed by husband and wife sculptors, William and Marjorie Simpson. A replica of the Norfolk City Seal graces the obverse; while the reverse depicts the Royal Mace of Norfolk. Intricate lettering is showcased by the Brilliant Uncirculated condition of these lustrous specimens.
