Far fewer U.S. proof sets were issued in the 1950s than in succeeding decades. The 1959 proof set had the lowest mintage until 2010 with just over 1.1 million output. Later mintages soared to as high as 4 million. Many sets were broken up to obtain individual Franklin silver half dollar proofs, which were minted only as part of complete proof sets, resulting in even fewer intact sets being available today. Packaging for early proof sets may vary. Original U.S. Mint packaging is not always available or desirable.
